Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock that is installed on casement windows like uPVC and double glazing made of wood. If you have to remove screws that secure the handle, you can use a screwdriver or pliers. Once you have done this, you will need to disassemble the handle by taking off the screws or pins that hold the spindle, and then taking away from the window.

Once you have the handle removed, you'll be capable of accessing the locking mechanism within the frame of the window and take out the cockspur wedge block that is attached to the handle to allow the window to open. Cockspur

Cockspur handles are typically found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle closes and turns onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) The handles are lockable or non-lockable. They are available in various nose heights that can be adapted to the frame.

The handle is secured with small triangle-shaped spur (spur) that is attached to the frame. They are typically one-way handles, however the deadlock that locks is a possibility to add additional security.

The replacement handles for cockspurs are easy to install. All you require is the correct backset and a brand new set (supplied). The backset is the distance that runs from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. In general Aluminium window frames tend to have a 9mm backset, while UPVC uses 21mm. There are a myriad of variations though so it is important to measure the handle prior to purchasing the handle (see video below for how).

This kind of window handle can be changed by simply removing the existing handle and removing the spindle, or in certain instances, the entire handle assembly. The new handle can be screwed in place using two pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screw comes in a brass or a zinc finish, to match existing hardware. There is also an option for a self-locking pozidriv screw.

Tilt and Turn
