How to Replace Door Locks

Door locks are the first line of defense against unauthorized access to your home. Locks may need to be replaced due to wear and tear or other events like moving into a new residence or a break-in.

You can determine the size of your cylinder by measuring the distance from the center of the knoblock cylinder to the adjustment screw. This measurement will enable you to purchase the correct-sized lock.

Deadbolt

Installing a deadbolt can be a great way to secure your door against intruders. When the bolt is extended into the strike plate of the doorframe it makes it more difficult for an intruder through the door. A single cylinder deadbolt is activated using a key on the exterior side and a thumb turn device on the interior. A deadbolt will only work only if it's correctly installed however.

You will first need to find out if the door has a hole that is suitable for a deadbolt or if you have to drill it out. With the template included with your lock installation kit, mark the location of the hole for the deadbolt on the door's surface. Then, you can use your tape measure to determine the height the deadbolt should be. Mark this high point on the door's edge and use the speedsquare to draw a straight line across the mark you made to mark the bolt hole.

Next, use a power drill to drill this area until the hole extends to the other side of the door. This could take a bit of time. Sand the hole and edge of the door to make it smooth. At this stage, it's a great idea to stain or paint your door.

Remove any screws that are visible from the deadbolt. This will reveal the front and back assemblies of the deadbolt, as well as the bolt that is inside. Then unscrew the old bolt and Replace Door Lock it by the new bolt to match the door hardware. You'll need to remove the bolt from a setplate. After that then you need to cut out the space for the strike plate on the door frame.

If your strike plate is not in alignment, it could be because the previous installer didn't mortise it properly or that a weatherstripping has changed the strike's position. Latch

A latch is a piece metal that extends through the doorjamb to secure it shut. The latch is operated either via a knob or handle located inside the door, or a thumb-turn on the outside. The latch can be secured using deadbolts to stop intruders from breaking in through the glass. It also provides protection from the accidental or deliberate closing of the door by pets or children. A latch can be installed using a single cylinder deadbolt or a double cylinder deadbolt, depending on the security level you prefer.

Installing a deadbolt is the same as installing a latch, but there are some differences. To make sure that the new lock will work, first determine the setback of the doorjamb using the tape measure. The setback is the distance from the edge of the doorjamb to the middle of the hole that will be used for the latch faceplate. Setbacks for standard latches are 2 3/8 to 2. 3/4 inches. If you have a larger setback, you may have to purchase a more substantial latch from a hardware store or locksmith.

The next step is to drill an edge bore hole through the doorjamb for the latch plate. Use a chisel and cut the mortise of the latch. Make sure the depth is enough to allow the faceplate to be in line with the doorjamb. Tape the strike plate in the correct position to ensure it's in the right position.

If the strike is set too high, the composite door replacement lock may be pushed in or pressure applied to it using a crowbar, or tire iron. This could also cause cracks in the doorjamb. To fix this issue, the strike can be lowered by drilling a new hole in the doorjamb and chiseling out the center of the hole that was previously drilled.

The last step is to put in the new strike plate, which can be accomplished by screwing it in place over the existing screw holes. Then, use wood putty to fill in the screw holes that were previously used and the bolt hole that won't be used. Once the putty is dry, sand it smooth for a professional finish.

Strike

An electric strike is a metal piece where the latch and deadbolt engage when the door is closed. It is an important part of the security of a lock, since it keeps the door shut and provides extra resistance to kicking or force applied to the door. If a door has been equipped with an electric strike, it will only be opened using an entry key or the control unit that controls its electrical impulses.

In the past, installing an electronic strike required cutting off a part of a doorjamb to let the latchbolt of a cylindrical lock from the pocket inside the strike. This modification is not just undesirable however, it also exposes the latchbolt mechanism and keeper to uninitiated users.

Recently, several electric strike manufacturers have developed a brand new electric strike called the "No Cut" strike that doesn't need cutouts in the doorjamb to operate. These strikes utilize a special design that allows the latchbolt and Replace door Lock keeper to slide into the strike pocket without damaging the faceplate of the doorjamb.

The strike is equipped with an internal ramp that lifts the latchbolt as well as the keeper when it receives the signal of the reader. The latchbolt and keeper are lifted higher up the ramp by the retract. When the door is closed, the deadbolt is retracted and the latchbolt retracts into the keeper.

Installing an electric strike can be a simple process, especially in the case of replacing the strike on a previous door. Also, you must ensure that the strike is wired to your access control system and that it is designed to operate in a fail-safe manner.

Upgrade your strike plates to high duty strike plates to prevent unauthorised entry. These plates are fitted with four to six three-inch screws instead of the two three-fourth inch screws that are typically used in regular strikes. These longer screws make breaking the frame to reach the thumb turn piece on a single deadbolt for a cylinder more difficult.
