Lolita's Care

For years, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, activists were hopeful that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the ocean.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor in a plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that bond with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

These updates indicate that Toki is aging rapidly and her health has declined.

It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not required to divulge this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an important part in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly, these plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
