It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can be used while you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. If you want to, you can switch the mopping pad to a dry one in seconds.

The robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy models from the rivals. It's one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also is among the most intelligent, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It comes with a simple mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.
