Driving License Category A2

The category A2 driving license allows you to ride motorcycles with no sidecar and the maximum engine power of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the motorcycle cannot exceed 0.2 kg/kW.

This driving licence was designed to let you get your small motorcycle driving licence early and then progress to the A2 licence with more engine power.

Scooters and motorcycles

The second level of motorcycle licence is the driving license category A2. This permits you to operate mopeds and small bikes up to 50cc. The course is designed to let you slowly climb the ladder of engine power, and then ponder an even bigger one. The test is more complex and requires more knowledge.

The category A2 driving licence is valid until you reach the age of 24. It may be used alongside a car driving licence category A1 or as a part of a provisional category B driver's license. If you are over 24 years old, you require a full category A driving license to operate a motorcycle with more than 35 kW.

You can get your group A1 licence at 16 years old (in Denmark, Malta, and Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic as well as in Germany, Hungary, Iceland and in the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Poland). Once you reach the age of 16, you must pass the A2 category motorbike test. You need to pass this before the age of 18. After two years, you can move to category A.

After passing the test in category A2, you can drive a motorcycle with or without sidecar and vehicles on three wheels with a power of up to 35 kW. These vehicles must have a weight/power that is not more than 0.02 kW/kg and cannot be derived directly from a vehicle with twice the maximum power.

If you've passed the two-part test for a moped or a motorcycle that is lower in class from the 1st July 1996, you can bypass the theory test and take only the practical test. You can either ride a small scooter or moped fitted with L plates, or obtain the new AM licence which allows you to ride bikes with a capacity of up to 50cc, with a maximum speed of 45mph. The AM licence is only valid if you've passed your theory test and have completed nine hours of training at a driving school.

Motor vehicles with 4 wheels

This category covers all motor vehicles with four wheels that are not buses or passenger vehicles. It also covers utilitarian vehicles such as vans, pickups, and panels. Motorhomes, campers and lorries are also covered. This category also includes vehicles like ambulances, hearses and carryalls that are made to carry eight or more people or have a weight limit of 750kg or greater. Drivers who have obtained an A1 licence may drive vehicles of this type with a trailer that has the maximum authorized mass of up to 775kg.

To be able to drive a car of this category, you need to pass the theory test. You must complete 12 90-minute lessons on the basic material, and 4 90-minute lessons on the additive (category AA2). The exams in the theory require a minimum score of 70%.

After passing the theory test, you will have to take a practical driving examination on both private and public roads. After passing both tests, you will receive an application for your driving license. You will need to present this request to the local authority within three years after passing your practical test.

In certain countries, once you have an A1 license for two years, there's no requirement to take an additional test to get an A2 driving license, which allows you to drive motorcycles with up to 35 kW. If you hold a driving licence of category A2, you are able to drive a tricycle as long as it has an engine capacity of 125cc and the maximum power output of 11 kW. This category was previously part of the A license. All drivers who received a full category A licence prior to 19th January 2013 were entitled to use mopeds, and they were able to keep the right.

Motor vehicles with five or more wheels

This category includes vehicles equipped with motors designed to be used on the roads for transport of passengers or goods. They must have at least two or three wheels in contact with the ground, a seat or saddle for the driver and passengers, and a motor capable of producing speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. These vehicles are usually equipped with a steering wheel and brakes. They also have the ability to be controlled in a straight line and can be driven in reverse. In some instances, the hood of these vehicles may be opened. This term was traditionally used for trucks (vans, minivans, panel, pickups and sport utility vehicles) and buses that can carry at least 16 passengers. A slightly different definition is employed by an additional federal requirement that regulates uniform licensing standards for drivers of commercial vehicles. This definition excludes vehicles that weigh 26,001 pounds gross weight or more.

In addition, the category A2 driving license may also be used to drive a moped, motor-driven bike, or motorcycle. This type of driving license is only valid for motors with the maximum cylinder volume of 125 cubic centimeters or a maximum power of 15 Kilowatts. This license can also be used for driving motor tricycles. This license class requires a minimum age of 16 years old. Physically disabled people may be granted a provisional right to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.

Some people choose to obtain an operator license, which is valid for vehicles that have a an authorized maximum weight of 3,500kg and up to eight seats. Drivers with an operator license are also allowed to tow trailers that weigh up to 750kg MAM. They are also able to transport a trailer as heavy as 3,500kg with a tractor or construction equipment.

Motor vehicles with trailers

The A2 category includes motorized vehicles that have trailers. These are not vehicles pulled by drivers, but are pulled by larger vehicles like cars. This category includes, for instance the tractor that tows a trailer, or small trucks that are designed to carry loads, like the ones used by plumbers and painters to transport supplies and tools to the work site. The maximum authorised mass (MAM) for this class is 8,250kg.

To drive a vehicle in this class you must pass the theory test for category A1 or have obtained a driver's license through direct entry. Depending on the kind of vehicle you are interested in, you may require passing a practical test prior to being able to drive it.

The license you receive for Category A2 is valid for a period of three years, beginning from the date you have passed your theory test. To keep it valid, you must renew it before the expiration date.

You can also get an driving license for other vehicles with special requirements. You will require a licence to drive a large vehicle (category C), which requires you to know the special regulations for the transportation of hazardous products.

The code 96 is added to your driving licence category B when you pass both the theory and the practical test but your vehicle and trailer aren't eligible for a category C license. The code 96 will be added to your driving licence category B if you have passed both the practical and theory tests, but your trailer or vehicle do not meet the requirements for a Category C licence.

You must hold a driving license in category B for at minimum two years, and pass both a theory as well as a practical test. To qualify, you must have also attended a special training course and have received additional training. This is referred to as a driver training course.
