It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. 5. Tachometer
