In the past the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment and this can lead to changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can over many generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with advantageous traits can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of completely new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into new species in a gradual and predictable way.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time the genetic variability could result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. The change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they don't pass on to the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. What is Creationism?

While Creationists may not all be Christian however, they are a majority. Creationists are generally divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The most well-known type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs are less well known however they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both kinds of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life came to be on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the founders of modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.

However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has won its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
