Melding form with function, French-door refrigerators offer stylish double doors that open to an expansive fridge on the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their unique features, like through-the-door dispensers and higher-end Ice makers.

We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the right one. They considered the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that GE’s Profile series is aimed at people who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchens. This refrigerator is packed with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. The refrigerator is expensive, so I expected better.

This refrigerator is a good option, despite the slight blip. It has a huge freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also has a large capacity for frozen food, which is a big difference from other models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment offers 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is about par for an French door fridge costing this much. It also has a decent-sized icemaker in the left door, but it's not the biggest I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create a an individual storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is good-looking, too. Its LED lighting is a nice feature and the storage bins feature a third shelf that folds up beneath itself to make it possible to store items that are tall. The drawers have temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to open and close, but I found the plastic's textured coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and has many options for customizing. It will also send notifications when the door is left unlocked and when the freezer or fridge requires defrosting, and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS included Precise fill which is an option that is available in other GE fridges that allow you to set the number of cups of water you'd like to pour out at once. It also has a countdown on the fridge's display to display how much water have left, but it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

It is designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen Bosch's French door refrigerator is one of a kind. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and two compressors for preserving food. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient, and it produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This fridge is ideal for a single household or a kitchenette with a built-in appearance and top-of-the highest quality food preservation.

This refrigerator was the highest-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for various reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never changing more than a fraction one degree. This is crucial in preventing freezer burn. The fridge's refrigerator section also performed well, achieving the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our testing.

Bosch is a household name known for its high-end appliances. Therefore, it's not a surprise that Bosch counter depth refrigerator is one of them. Bosch counter depth fridge can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's Home Connect. This app allows you to monitor and manage your fridge remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive and has great features and functions at a fair price.

It is crucial to be aware of the limitations of the fridge. You may need to get creative with tall items because the fridge is limited in shelf space. Also, the shelves are not sprillproof and can be easily stained or damaged by sharp objects. The trays can be easily removed from the fridge. However, they must be cleaned regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who need lots of space within a small frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge has the standard french door fridge best door design, with two rows of shelving with spill-capture and a set of crisper drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give taller items more space. There's also a full-width drawer to store food items and an internal water dispenser.

One of the best features of this refrigerator is that its ice maker is in the freezer, which makes it easy to move frozen ice to the fridge for use when needed. The freezer features thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers to help you better organize the position of items. It comes with a large bin for storing frozen food and a separate bin for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is a cool feature of the refrigerator. It lets you manage the refrigerator's temperature as well as lighting from your smartphone. It's a nice way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't enhance the overall performance of the refrigerator. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill foods in this fridge than some of the others we test. This could be due to the larger capacity.

The doors are another problem with this refrigerator. The sunken handles allow smaller people to open them from the bottom. However taller people have a difficult time closing them without slamming them. It would have been much better if they came with a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent choice for those looking to combine the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with an efficient design. It has a capacity that is above average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a little less than the top counter depth refrigerator that comes with an ice maker, making it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a basic fridge that may not be as attractive as some of its competitors however it has enough features to make it a an excellent option. Its most significant feature, the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge ice maker and a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is situated over the two crisper bins, is another excellent feature. The drawer lets you redirect a portion of the fridge's cooling power into this area so it can be used to store food items that require special attention. You can alter this feature using a slider that's located right in the middle of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge, but I've noticed that adjusting the generic settings tends to have a better effect than specific ones.

During my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent in various parts of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary significantly from 38 degrees. This is a good performance, but it does not quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also combine this fridge with a smart thermometer for more precise readings of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge proof" finish. It repels fingerprints and streaks better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
